Institut Français de Pondichéry
International Research on Cultures, Environments
and Societies in South Asia
Collections resulting from various digitization projects that were either led by the IFP or in which the IFP has been a major partner, but which are hosted on other sites.
Collections that will become freely available online in the near future. We envision many more joining this portal over time.
International Research on Cultures, Environments
and Societies in South Asia
The Institut Français de Pondichéry (IFP) located in Pondicherry, South India, is a research centre under the joint supervision of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). It is a unique instrument recognized by the Indo-French Treaty of 1956 which defines the role of the IFP as being that of an establishment of research, expertise and higher education.
The IFP's scientific outreach is international, although it remains primarily focused on research in India and on India. The IFP contributes to the understanding and to the conservation of cultural heritage (languages, religions, architecture, medicine, etc.) and natural heritage (environment, forests, etc.) while taking into account powerful socio-economic dynamics. A lot of the research focuses on the interaction between society and the environment.
