Description

The manuscript is formed by a text entitled Akattiyar vaittiyam-1500 of 329 leaves numbered from 1 to 328 on which it 1468 verses are inscribed; it is incomplete. The manuscript is in good condition despite it was full of fungus. The leaves from 208 to 226 and 235 to 252 are partly broken or slightly damaged.

The text deals with three subjects : pulse reading; etiology and therapeutics; and iatrochemical processes.

Concerning pulse reading : the text details the three types of pulses, the places for exploration, and interpretations of their reading, notably that of poor prognosis.

The etiologies analysed by the text concern venereal diseases (pāl viṉai nōykaḷ), fistula (pavuttiram), hemorrhoids (mūlam), gastritis (vayirru ericcal), gastric ulcer (vayiṟṟu puṇ) and eye diseases (kaṇ nōykaḷ). The therapeutics which are exposed concern administration of medicinal products through the nostrils (naciyam) and formulas recommended to treat genital infection (piṟappuṟuppu toṟṟu), gastric and renal problems, diabetes Mellitus (matu mēka), mental disorders (mūḷai kōḷaṟu), eye diseases, skin diseases (tōl nōykaḷ), wounds (puṇ), etc.

The iatrochemical processes explored in the text comprise the method to purify metals and minerals : mercury, sulphur, cinnabar, arsenic disulphide and trisulphide, arsenic trioxide, zinc, tin, dross iron, aconite, mica, copper, copper pyrite, gypsum, etc. and some poisonous plants such as Shorea robusta and croton seeds. It presents some formulas of centūram (red calcined powders) prepared with tin and iron.

இதில் கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ள மருந்துகளின் வேதியல் குணங்கள், உலோகம் மற்றும் தாது பொருட்களின் சுத்தி முறைகள் ஆகும் : அவை ரசம், கந்தகம், லிங்கம், வெள்ளை பாடாணம், கௌரி பாடாணம், தாளகம், வெள்வங்கம் துத்தநாகம், மண்டூரம், நாபி, அப்ரகம், தாமிரம், பொன் நிமிளை சிலாசத்து போன்றவை மற்றும் விஷ தாவரங்களான குங்கிலியம் மற்றும் நேர்வாளம் ஆகும்.வெள்வங்கம் மற்றும் இரும்பில் இருந்து செய்யப்படும் செந்தூரம் செய்முறைகள் பற்றியும் விளக்குகிறது

Extent and Format of Original Material

Size of the manuscript : 16cm x 3,6cm. The leaves of the text are numbered from 1 to 328. An additional leaf is placed between the leaves n°188 and 189, and another leaf which does not belong to the text close the manuscript. The manuscript is in good condition despite it was full of fungus. The leaves from 208 to 226 and 235 to 252 are partly broken or slightly damaged.

The manuscript contains 331 palm leaves of 12 to 16 lines per leaf, with two wooden boards.
