Description

The manuscript is constituted of a text, written in verses, whose the palm leaves are numbered from 1 to 38; it is incomplete. The manuscript is in good condition; the leaves from 29 to 38 of the manuscript have been little damaged by rodents. The leaves are very darkened due to infestation of fungus. The text, entitled Varma Cūttiram, deals with varma practice. This text, first, describes its content as well as the persons to whom it must not be given. Indeed, as varmakkalai (art of varmam) comprises two antinomic practices, that of the medicine to treat injuries, and that of the war to kill or neutralise enemy, the transmission of the varma knowledge calls for caution.

The text, then, describes a number of vital points (varmam) in the body, namely, tilartta kālam, naṭcattira kālam, cevikkuṟṟi kālam, piṭari kālam, uṟakka kālam, tummi kālam, aṭappa kālam, nēr varmam, curukki kālam, ciṟiya atti curukki kālam, kallaṭai kālam, taṭavu muṟaikaḷ, caṅku tiri kālam, vittu varmam, cuḻiyāṭi varmam, vāyvu kālam, utira kālam, perumi varmam, viṟacci varmam, kuruntu kuṟṟi, āmpa varmam, aḷavāṭi varmam, vilaṅku varmam, puca varmam, cuḷukku varmam, moḻi varmam and kōccu varmam.

An additional leaf, situated at the end of the text is a salutation addressed to the guru (the person from whom the author of the text has obtained his knowledge).

1 முதல் 38 வரை எண் கொண்ட 39 ஓலைகளை உடைய இந்நூல் விருத்த வடிவில் எழுதப்பட்ட ஒரு முழுமை இல்லா நூலாகும்.இந்த சுவடி நல்ல நிலையில் உள்ளது; 29 முதல் 38 வரை உள்ள ஓலைகள் எலியால் சிறிதளவு பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.பூஞ்சையின் பாதிப்பால் இதன் ஓலைகளை மிகவும் கருமை நிறம் அடைந்து உள்ளன.வர்ம சூத்திரம் என்ற தலைப்புடைய இந்த நூல் வர்மத்தை பற்றி விளக்குவதாகும்.முதலில் வர்ம தகவல்கள் பற்றியும் பின்னர் அந்த தகவல்கள் கொடுக்கப்பட கூடாத நபர்கள் பற்றியும் விளக்குகிறது.வர்மத்தை நோய் தீர்க்கும் மருந்தாகவும், போரில் எதிரிகளை வீழ்த்தும் ஒரு ஆயுதம் போலவும் பயன்படுத்தபடுகிறது.வர்மத்தை பற்றிய தகவல்களை பிறருக்கு கூறுவது ஆபத்தானதாகும்

Extent and Format of Original Material

Size of the manuscript : 26,5cm x 2,8cm. The text is numbered from 1 to 38 in Tamil and Arab. It contains an additional leaf for the satutation to the guru. The manuscript is in good condition; the leaves from 29 to 38 of the manuscript have been little damaged by rodents. The leaves are very darkened due to infestation of fungus.

The manuscript contains 39 palm leaves of 10 to 12 lines per leaf. It has no wooden boards.

Mohana Raj acquired the manuscript, 10 years ago from Mr Vicēnti, both a teacher and a siddha practitioner, who resided in the village of Nadaikavu (Naṭaikkāvu, 5km from Muncirai).
