Miscellaneous Notes

Similar to no. 177.1. From the colophon on fol. 52b (iti durvāsasā proktaṃ pradīpanṛpateḥ puraḥ। babhāṇa jiṣṇave paścāt hārīto munipuṅgavaḥ। iti varṇāśramasamayācāracandrikānāmni śrīmadupāgame durvāsapradīpasallāpe muktitattvajñāne vicāraṃ kiñcit paryavasitam।) it is learnt that what durvāsas uttered on the conduct of castes and stages in life was reproduced by the sage hārita to king pradīpa. This topic forms part of the "upāgama" of the mūlāgama kāmika. the other colophons (fol. 40a, 66a, 80b and 88a) mention this text as forming part of a hāritopākhyāna. The text is divided into 2 sectīons called upadeśa. However the expression aṣṭamasarga is written on the margin of fol. 65a. The text no. 171.1 is divided into sarga-s but this cannot suggest that 171.1 and 171.2 could have formed a single text. Upadeśa 5,6,8 and 9 are marked in the margin of fols. 22b, 32b, 37b, 40a, 46b and 70b respectively. The colophon on fols. 58a, 66a, 80b and 88a mention the upadeśas as 7,9,10 and 11. The fols. 38a, 40a, 48b and 52b have fresh numbering. The essence of the śaiva philosophy is given in 56 śloka-s in fols. 48b-52a. Writing is in Tamil on fols. 60a-62a and 70b-79b. On the margin of fol. 59a the words dakṣiṇadeśe anuṣṭheya are written indicating the treatment from this fol. is about the practices which prevail in South India, perhaps Tamil Nadu. Fol. 20 which follows fol. 19 immediately does not form part of this text, as the next fol. 20 is in continuation of fol. 1. Similarly fol. bearing no. 44a having the writtings in only one line does not form part of this text. This text is different from the printed text with the name varṇāśramacandrikā, Grantha, Kumbakonam, 1930. There are 2 fols. with no. 20 and 58 and 1 fol. unnumbered (= 44A)
